In 1866 Nelson Story led the first major cattle drive of Texas longhorns to Montana. He bought roughly a thousand head, hired tough drovers, and pushed them more than 1,400 miles up the Bozeman Trail. Defying army orders and fighting off Sioux attacks, Story and his crew reached the Gallatin Valley that December, founding a lasting ranching empire.
